How Much Does a Cruise Cost?

What Makes a Great Cruise Line

From a cost standpoint, a great cruise line is one whose advertised fare bears some honest relationship to what you actually spend by the end of the voyage. Some operators quote a temptingly low base fare and then layer on drinks packages, specialty dining, Wi-Fi, gratuities, and shore excursions until the bill doubles; others quote high and include nearly everything. Neither philosophy is wrong, but knowing which one your line follows is the single biggest step toward budgeting accurately. It also explains the enormous spread in cruise pricing — on the same week, a short mainstream sailing and an all-inclusive luxury voyage can differ by a factor of ten while floating on the same ocean.

The tiers are fairly consistent. Mass-market lines such as Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and MSC are built around volume and choice, with competitive base fares and optional extras everywhere you look. Premium lines like Celebrity, Princess, and Holland America charge a little more and dial up the refinement. At the top, Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, and Silversea fold drinks, gratuities, specialty dining, and often excursions into the fare. The line you choose determines not just how much you pay but how many times you reach for your card once onboard.

Our Ranking Criteria

When comparing the real cost of cruising, look past the headline number and price out a complete voyage: the per-person fare, port taxes and government fees, gratuities, a drinks package where relevant, Wi-Fi, a shore excursion or two, and transfers or parking at the port. Port fees deserve special attention — they are not always bundled into advertised fares and can add a hundred dollars or more per person, and the same goes for government charges. It is also worth weighing how transparent a line is about those extras before you book, and how comfortably you can sail without buying every add-on. A cheap fare on a ship engineered for constant upselling can cost more, in money and in mood, than a pricier fare on a line where most things are simply included.

The Ranked List

For pure affordability, Carnival is hard to beat: four-night Bahamas and Mexico sailings have been advertised from around $269 per person on ships like Carnival Radiance and Carnival Conquest, which works out to a nightly rate most land resorts cannot touch. MSC Cruises and Norwegian compete in the same waters, and Norwegian’s studio cabins give solo travelers a rare escape from double-occupancy pricing. In the middle tier, Royal Caribbean delivers value through sheer scale — water slides, Broadway-caliber shows, and neighborhoods rather than quiet bargains — while Celebrity, Princess, and Holland America reward travelers who prefer a calmer ship where the included dining is genuinely good. At the luxury end, Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, Silversea, and Viking Ocean look expensive per night but often cost less than they appear once you subtract the excursions, drinks, gratuities, and Wi-Fi you would otherwise buy separately. Virgin Voyages splits the difference, wrapping adults-only dining and gratuities into competitive fares, and some lines — Holland America among them — sell packages that bundle excursions, drinks, and service charges at a discount.

How to Choose

Start from your total budget rather than the sticker fare. If the number matters most, sail short and close to home: three- and four-night cruises from Florida, Texas, or Southern California ports keep airfare out of the equation entirely. Choose an inside stateroom if you plan to be everywhere except your cabin — the savings against a balcony can fund an excursion or two. Travel in shoulder seasons rather than school holidays, when fares jump. And before booking anywhere, do the extras math on paper: if a drinks package, Wi-Fi, and gratuities push a mainstream fare past a luxury line’s all-inclusive rate, the supposedly expensive ship may actually be the bargain. Travel agents sometimes hold promotions and onboard credit that never appear on the lines’ own sites, so it costs nothing to ask.

FAQ

Are cruise prices per person? Yes. Fares are almost always quoted per person and assume two people sharing a cabin. A solo cruiser typically pays a single supplement — often close to double the per-person rate — unless the ship has dedicated solo cabins or a supplement-waiver promotion running.

What does the average cruise cost? Short mainstream sailings can start in the low hundreds of dollars per person, a week in the Caribbean on a big-ship line commonly runs from the mid hundreds to around a thousand, and luxury voyages can reach several thousand. Season, cabin category, and the age of the ship move the number more than anything else.

What costs extra on board? Usually alcohol, specialty restaurants, shore excursions, spa treatments, specialty coffee, and sometimes Wi-Fi and gratuities. Many lines bundle several of these into packages sold before sailing, usually at a discount to onboard prices.

Do kids ever cruise free? Yes, periodically. Several major lines run kids-sail-free promotions on select sailings, typically when third and fourth guests share a cabin with two fare-paying adults. These offers cluster outside peak vacation weeks.

What about getting to the ship? Budget for it separately. Parking at many cruise ports runs twenty dollars per day or more, hotel nights in the port city add up, and taxis or rideshares to and from the pier are rarely included in any fare.
